The shelf is made of a reasonable gauge SS for the price and is relatively easy to install; however, the design seriously compromises its usefulness. With the lid closed its handle covers the shelf by at least one-third and is so close to the surface (of the shelf) that a sheet pan doesn't have clearance. So, for example, if you want to place your pan of meat on the shelf, load the smoker, and then close the lid you have to remove your pan, and anything else on the shelf, to do so. On the flip side, you can't place anything on the shelf before you open the lid. I've resorted to a separate table next to the unit. Also, the shelf has hooks to hold the upper cooking rack when not in use. the hooks are on the back side of the shelf mounting bracket facing the back of the unit. Even with the shelf in the "up" position, the user has to squat down to see what you're doing.

Ultimately a design in need of improvement. For the price, you can get a decent SS side table.

I bought this, then bought a complete log skidder which had its own skidding tongs, so I sent this one back. But the quality was excellent! Really well-made! I liked these better than the ones that came with the skidder, but I couldn't justify keeping them.
