   I added this to my Woodwind 24 so that I can reverse sear steaks. I usually use a charcoal chimney that’s red hot, and I was doubtful that this would go as good a job. Boy, was I wrong! I turned this up to medium heat, and after 10 minutes, I checked the temperature with an IR thermometer. It was close to 900 degrees! (Don’t put this next to your house. Really!)

   I can get a sear on a steak with this that’s unbelievable. I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys a steak with a nice sear.

   Works well and heats up nice, puts a seared finish to steaks and burgers. Purchased this unit to replace the original SEAR BOX that was purchased with the grill from Camp Chef. I tried to contact Camp Chef to see if parts were available for the Sear Box and after I purchased this – two weeks after sending request to Camp Chef they replied with a parts list.

   The Camp Chef sidekick works great, but for the price…I expected a higher quality finish on the grill box cover and handle. The stainless steel on the handle is rough to the touch and all the edges seem like they were grinded but not polished properly, if at all. This isn’t a cheap grill and I expect more for the money I paid.

   I ordered two of these and they both have the same issues. As you can see from the pictures, the stainless finish is less than desirable. Scratches on the top and side of the lid, and where the clasp hole enters, there is a noticeable area that didn’t get polished. The welds on the bottom are barely tacked, and I’m not sure how long they will hold up. Also, the riv-nuts on the bottom are the wrong size where the M4 screws are supposed to attach the mounting brackets. (You can see where some of mine popped out). The M4 screws are too large to fit in these riv-nuts, and the riv-nuts pop out very easily because they are the wrong size (too small… or the hole is too big, you pick). I modified mine by just using an M4 stainless washer to attach the brackets. I’m only keeping this because I don’t want a separate grill from my pellet grill. Had I known this, I would have skipped Camp Chef altogether. Not worth the price paid, and because I saw this in two instances, I’m thinking they have skimped on Quality Control. It’s been 5 days since customer service has returned my email. Boo!

   Since you can’t sear meats or get a crispy coating on meats, the sear box is the answer. It is also a nice to use as a cooking surface when taking the sear box off and just use the burner. Also, the burner is cast iron so it should never wear out.

   Overall this was a good purchase. Burner works great for frying with a cast iron Dutch oven. Does a great job searing steaks on the cast iron grates which is the main reason I got this. Gets up to heat fast. However, it does flare up pretty good. I have not tried burgers on it yet and am apprehensive about doing so due to how easily it flares up even when trying to cook at a lower temperature. All in all, I would definitely buy this again due to how well it works for the main reason I purchased it and that’s searing steaks after starting out on the smoker side.

   I was hesitant to get it, but it went on sale for black Friday and pulled the trigger on it. Works great, this thing gets crazy hot for putting a perfect sear on steaks or turn it down to put a pot of beans on the side. And its camp chef so you know its build good and easy to assemble

   This side unit is why I switched from a traeger to a camp chef. Don’t want wood flavour than bang. Propane side bbq, pizza? Bang! There’s a pizza oven attachment. Love breakfast? They got you brother, the side griddle is perfect. Best of all they all fit on the 14 inch stove system too. I definitely do not own shares in camp chef but why pay more for less when you can get more for less. I’d buy that for a dollar

    For the price it should last more than 2 years. Ive kept it covered, Ive cleaned it out every year, bottom continues to rust out along with the grates and every other part. Does the job I guess but no drain options for the grease just left it rust.
