   I have used the older model 36 inch Camp Chef Over the Fire Grill for many years and have loved the large flat diamond plate grill grate. That is the grill grate that is still pictured on the box cover and all the web pages. Recently, I ordered the smaller 24 inch model to use on day trips. The new model has a much smaller rough mesh grate that makes it very hard to move food on the grill, or to flip steaks or burgers, as the food sticks to the rough surface. Also, it is almost impossible to clean, even with a good wire brush. Camp Chef says they have been making all of their OTF Grills with the new smaller rough grate for over two years now, even though the box covers, web pages and web photos, all show the older far more usable larger flat diamond plate surface. So be aware, you are not going to get what is described or pictured by Camp Chef or their retail sellers.

   For some reason the legs on our one don’t open out to the same degree, so it doesn’t sit level and the jacket potatoes would roll down it. That said, with the height adjusted, and sat over the camp firepit, it cooks just brilliantly. With a pair of fire gloves, you can lift it on and off the fire to add more fuel underneath, and it made a fantastic job of a couple of giant rump steaks.
   Pretty easy to clean if there’s a big sink at the campsite, but the black coating has started to come off after just a couple of cleans with a brush.
   Not gonna stop using it though, unless the coating starts coming off on the food.

   Bought this to add an extra shelf in my smoker. The top shelf in my smoker it basically useless other than to smoke buns or small items. I am able to smoke more meat with this extra shelf when needed. This grill grate is sturdy, and well-made. Folds flat for easy packing

   Works great in my green mountain grill Daniel Boone. I did a 16 pound brisket that I separated between the point and the flat. The shelf let me cook them faster and easier. I’ve also used it for wings and pork belly burnt ends without a problem. It comes in and out without a problem and is easy to clean.

    This grate fit perfectly in the California Campground fire pits provided at camp sites. I use a combination of charcoal and hickory wood chunks to make sausage, hot dogs, burgers, vegetables for our family. Sturdy. As expected when trying to clean… it’s a bbq grate. I bring an oven glove to remove grate when its time for Smores! Exactly what I wanted. Very pleased with purchase. Will be using this bbq grate many times a year.

    I like the product except that the description is the wrong size!!!!! in the main description it says 18×36, in the details it says the box size is 18×36, and states the item is 17×25. these are all in accurate. the actual size is 16″x24″. very disappointed that this is an outdoorcooking.us.com prime item with such confusion in the details for such a simple product.

    This simple, robust grill surface does exactly what I had hoped. It is stable, spreads heat well across the grill and has a simple, reliable construction. I have cooked on it several times now over an open fire and find that you can effectively burn the surface clean after use with a little brushing so it is very low maintenance. You can vary the heat by moving embers around underneath or by tilting it slightly in the fire so you have a lower hotter end and a cooler higher end.

    It folds away almost flat so takes up hardly any storage space compared to a bbq and would suit those who enjoy a campfire & bushcraft cookery. It’s too heavy, however, to be a realistic option for self-supported wildcamping unless you like to lug a lot of weight around. The price is very fair for something that should last for years and it’s by far the best grill of its type I’ve found with folding legs.

    Build quality is 4/5 stars. It could be designed better. I don’t know how long the paint will last once it’s used over a fire. We will try to use aluminum foil over ours because of the paint used on the metal.
    I think the metal needs to be cleaned good and treated with cooking oil before storing this grill away.
