To begin with, this item is heavy! It does require seasoning as it is steel and unprotected, it will rust. I lit a full chimney of coals and while waiting for them to come to temp, I washed the grate to remove the oil used to protect it during shipping. I rubbed a thin coat of cast iron seasoning on all of the surfaces, top, bottom and sides, then placed it over the bed of coals. As it got hot and the seasoning set, I wiped the surface again with more seasoning. When the coals died out, I was left with a very dark, slick surface. I like to use this grate with the Vortex; this is perfect for wings and smash burgers. You can also caramelize onions, cook bacon and sausages, brown your burger or hot dog buns and you can quickly sear anything on the center grate. After using, I scrape it down and apply a thin coat of seasoning for protection. From the above, I think that you can surmise that I really like this grate.

I was pleasantly surprised by this item. I won’t go on and on about its brilliant design and workmanship because doing so would be both phony and stupid. To start with, there isn’t much design work that went into this and, in my opinion, that is the beauty of this item. A round plate of thick steel with a circle cut out of the center and a filler for the center with the company logo cut into it. Made on a CNC plasma or water jet cutter. It just does what it is supposed to do. It provides a cooking or cooling surface for foods in a Weber Kettle. There was nothing hard about it. Cleaned initially with a little soap and water, started a snake fire in the Kettle and waited. Seasoned by wiping down with a high temp resistant oil (Peanut or Grape Seed work really well). Once initially seasoned, we fried some mushrooms, onions and burgers. Turned out really well. Applied a light coating of vegetable oil after it cooled. This will most likely be self seasoning in the future with the grease from hamburgers and other meats and vegetable oil from cooking various veggies at the same time. Simple product that does just what it is advertised to do. All Pro and only one Con. It is overpriced by a lot.
