   The first one I received was dented where it would have sat on the grill and looked like it had been returned by someone else. The instructions had dark prints in them. Sent that one backs s ordered another. This one looked brand new and was fine.

   The instructions aren’t that great. Pictures are small. Basically had to figure out how the wires were supposed to get clamped and wrapped by trial and error. Like another poster I received 4 wires but should have only gotten 2. But there are 4 holes where the wires can go so it was confusing. But once I got it together it seems pretty sturdy and will work well. I put a high temp felt gasket where it meets the Weber base which seemed to help it sit better on the Weber base

   Embona bien con los Weber de 22 pulgadas, los materiales son de calidad, ensamblarlo fue todo un reto porque las instrucciones no son muy claras pero después de un rato lo logré, funciona bién aunque con el calor seguido se sueltan los cables aunque estén bien apretados.

   Low rating goes to 5 stars once I can contact the seller/resolve an issue. Used this item first time to make a Lot of chicken for my Son’s 30th birthday celebration. Found a defect to the handle where the E ring retainer is actually undersized and came of during use and eliminated the ability to raise the fire grate. Luckly this caused it to fail in the lower position and I was able to recover. Issue could also be that the groove for the E-Ring was not cut deep enough. The issue with my unit is that the E ring installed from the supplier is undersized and doesn’t fully collapse to the diameter of the groove in the crank shaft. I had my doubts on assembly when I saw it but went ahead anyway as I had no choice. I am now in the process of finding a substitute E ring that will fit properly else I will drill a hole in the shaft and install a SS washer and cotter pin as a retainer that won’t pop off. I also plan to clamp a lug on the end of the cable that runs through the cable clamps so that it cannot pull free if something happens. When the fire great drop on the one side when the E-ring failed the cable on that side pulled free when I initially tried to raise the fire grate before realizing the crank shaft had popped free, releasing the shaft. Trying to locate the seller for spare parts and have lie communication. Update for 7/5 I made the following changes and it’s all good now. I’ll keep the overall rating the same as there are some key design issues that caused the failure and affects overall reliability. I plan to keep this accessory on most of the time so need better confidence that things don’t go wrong in the middle of a cook. I list below the changes I made: 1. My unit had an undersized E-Ring that came off during my first cook allowing one side of the fuel grate to drop. Lucky for me it was fully lowered as I was doing a high temp roadside chicken cook. The unit failed as I was trying to crank the fuel grate up. A properly sized E-Ring would have prevented the problem and you can see and example in my photos. My ultimate solution though was to roach out a SS washer to fit the shaft and go with a properly sized circlip which give so much more support and should prevent any future failure. 2. The cables provided to link the fuel grate carrier to the crank shaft are too short IMHO to properly set up and tighten into the clamps. I ended up tossing the stock cables after the one slipped out during the issue above with longer versions that would allow me to more easily position through the clamps on the crankshaft. I used ferrules from big box along with 1/16 inch cable (rope) I happened to have from a marine supplier. Do not use the 1/16 cable from big box as it really doesn’t have enough strands to be flexible for wrapping around the crankshaft. Looke for 1/16th cable “rope” from a marine supply house. 3. The cable clamps on the crank shaft had 4.0mm cap head screws that were just a little short. This creates a problem when you are trying to feed the suspension cables into the clamps. By using new SS screws that were just a couple mm longer gave me the ability to open the clamps up much more and allow me to feed the now longer cables through the clamps and set things so the fuel great carrier was level. Once I pulled through the new cables I installed ferrules on that end as well and cut off the excess. This (ferrule on the clamp end) creates a “fail safe” that will not allow the cables to slip through the clamps. These improvements makes this kit a keeper for me. I plan to keep it installed on the Performer for all my cooks. It is removable by simply lifting of the assembly though. It creates a 3″-12″ range of distance between the fuel greate to the food grate. Awesome. To me this is a LONG awaited “fix” of a key deficiency in the Weber kettle that is IMHO better than the multi – level fuel grate in the $$ Weber Summit Charcoal Grill. As a final note – I’m going to trial this improved version for a while. I do not like that the very solid shafts provided to guide the fuel grate carrier are only attached by 1/4 x 1″ or so carriage bolts. I would prefer to drill into them about 2 inches or so to accept thicker carriage bolts say 3/8″ x 3″ that in my view would prevent any flex during heating that would allow the guide shafts to move around and bind. But until that problem actually happens I’ll leave things as they are. I’m updating to bump a star as this unit with Craycourt cast iron grates with the mods I mention is still cranking along after 7 years. I wish someone would have a look and see if these improvements have been made. For example is they selling upgraded version to correct the original issues from the original version. A great product – just can’t vouch for the quality just yet as I have no idea what improvements have been made from original.
