   I’ve got the large Big Green Egg. This fits pretty well although it doesn’t sit completely down. There is a small gap because its just a tad large where the BGE has some ribs in the ceramic within the ash section. The little ash tray doesn’t hold a lot, and somewhat restricts the airflow. Its great for my typical medium heat shorter cook, but doesn’t hold enough for a long smoke, and is too restrictive for a super hot one. On the other hand I can use the ash can without it, because the can makes it super easy to pull out the ash with the regular tool. On a long cook I use it without the little tray, its pretty easy to clean the ash bucket once or twice. Likewise for a short hot cook, I just leave out the try and dump the ash once it’s cooled. Its easy to pull it out by the bail and just dump it. The standard BGE cast iron plate fits the ash can perfectly. I don’t usually use that plate though because I find it’s too restrictive and can clog. I use a basket instead which works OK with the cast iron ash can. It leaks a little around the back edge though because the ash can doesn’t fit tightly enough. I have to occasionally clean below it. All in all this is a pretty good addition to the BGE, but not perfect.

   The actual basket fits nice but I am not sure yet if it affects air flow yet. The main reason it got 2 stars is because of the ash tray and handle. The tray is about 3″ too short. When it is pushed all the way in, the tiny tool sent to remove the tray is too short to reach the tray. In order to insert the tool into the grab holes on the tray, you must squeeze the tool and the tension holds the tool in place for tray removal. I’m a fit man and the tool is so short, it is almost impossible to compress tool for utilization.

   This fits perfectly in a large BGE and makes ash removal really easy but it reduces your airflow pretty significantly. So for the ease of cleaning you pay the price. When grilling, I can’t get the egg above 450F no matter how hard I try with this installed. When smoking it works great but you have to keep up with it. On a 16 hour slow cook, the smaller volume is going to fill up and starve your coals of air unless you empty it. Great product and really well built, just requires some attention.

   This ash catcher is a great addition to my Large Big Green Egg. In fact, BGE should include an ash can with the purchase of an Egg. It will still require additional cleaning at times but mostly I can just pull this out and dump it. It is cast iron and heavy so hopefully it will last a long time. The scoop that comes with it can be left in place but it definitely cuts down on airflow which is fine for a low and slow cook but I take mine out for high heat cooking. It is made in China.
